HSC Maths Revision Day attracts hundreds of students

Up to 500 HSC students from the Illawarra and surrounding regions will flock to UOW tomorrow (Friday 20 June) for a HSC Maths Revision Day.

Students will attend workshops where they review the HSC Maths curriculum, receive tips from the experts on how to approach the HSC exams and learn about options for studying Mathematics at UOW.

One of the event organisers, Professor Jacqui Ramagge, said the students would also get a chance to go to presentations with speakers who have graduated from UOW and gone on to interesting and rewarding careers.

The students will be officially welcomed at the Hope Theatre before going into their sessions. They will receive a guest lecture from the Director of the Walter and Elisa Hall Institute of Medical Research, Professor Doug Hilton.

Professor Hilton has received many prizes and awards for his contribution to medical research, including the Amgen Medical Researcher Award, the inaugural Commonwealth Health Minister’s Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research and the GSK Australia Award for Research Excellence.

The event is being hosted by the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences which is also conducting a Maths Teachers Day on Tuesday 24 June from 9am to 3pm.

Professor Ramagge said the University was committed to supporting schools in its regions and one of the ways it aimed to do this was by providing professional development for teachers.

“This day is a chance to interact with world class academics, to respond to ideas for mathematics teaching from your peers, to increase awareness of trends of professional interest and to network with colleagues,” she said.

Media please note: The HSC Revision Day will run from 8.30am to 2.45pm, Friday 20 June.
