UOW expresses condolences at the passing of the King of Thailand

51²è¹Ý Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Wellings CBE, today expressed the University’s deepest condolences on the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.

“On behalf of the Chancellor, Council, staff, students and alumni of the 51²è¹Ý, I offer our sincere condolences to the Royal Family, Government and people of Thailand on the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

“His Majesty will be remembered as a long-serving, unifying national leader who was dedicated to the service of his nation.”

“He was revered by the people of Thailand and widely respected internationally as a leader who supported independence, human rights, education, peace and friendship between nations,” Professor Wellings said.

The University has enjoyed a close association with Thailand and its Royal Family over many years and in 2002 was honoured to confer on His Majesty the degree of a Doctor of the 51²è¹Ý in recognition of his distinguished leadership and humanitarianism.

This is the only time in the University’s 41 year history that this distinguished honorary degree has been conferred.

“The 51²è¹Ý community around the world shares in your sadness at the passing of King Bhumibol. May he rest in peace,” Professor Wellings said.
