UOW graduate makes NRL debut with St George Illawarra Dragons
How perseverance and a long-standing relationship with the Dragons made Adam Clune’s dream a reality
Adam Clune graduated from the 51²è¹Ý (UOW) in 2019 with a double degree Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Laws after juggling his study demands with playing for the St George Illawarra Dragons in the U20s and NSW Cup teams.
Adam has a long-standing relationship with the Dragons; his association began in 2011 when he featured for the Illawarra Steelers' Harold Matthews team. Since then, there has been no looking back. Adam has been steadily progressing through different stages of the game within the club.
Last year, he was named 2019 Canterbury Cup halfback of the year after helping the Dragons to the minor premiership.
Following an impressive pre-season, Adam’s development player contract, which was awarded to him this season, was upgraded to a Top 30 contract.
“It’s an exciting moment in my career as I wasn’t expecting re-signing so early in the season. I am looking forward to assisting the Dragons and working towards achieving success for the team,” Adam said.
“I still remember my time at UOW while playing for the Dragons in U20s and the constant support I received from tutors to balance my studies and the sport has been truly amazing.
“The partnership between UOW and the Dragons is going to greatly benefit the current and future generations wishing to progress their career in the game.”
On 8th June, Adam Clune celebrated his 25th birthday and his 100th senior game at the Red V at the Bankwest Stadium.
The Dragons and UOW initially formalised their association in 2009, committing under an Memorandum of Understanding to collaboratively pursue positive outcomes for both organisations regarding research, scholarships, community programs, internships, promotions and facility use.
The partnership between UOW and the Dragons has opened up opportunities for collaboration and engagement within the wider community.
UOW also established the Graduates of League program (GOL) in 2012 with the NRL to increase the university entry, retention and completion rates of elite athletes and professional sports people.
Over the past seven years, the UOW GOL program has supported more than 62 student-athletes and employed 76 students as peer mentors.
UOW is dedicated to supporting students through various programs and has outstanding reputation for its world-class learning environments across a broad range of disciplines.
