UOW secures biggest ever New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants

Funding to support scholarships, internships for high-achieving students

The 51²è¹Ý (UOW) has secured more than $1.7 million of Australian Government funding under the 2021 New Colombo Plan (NCP) mobility program – setting a new record for the University’s funding under the scheme.

All four faculties and the Global Strategy portfolio received grant funding allocations for use in 2021 and first half of 2022.

The signature student mobility initiative by the Federal Government provides funding to universities to support Australian undergraduate students to participate in semester-based or short-term study, internships, mentorships, practicums and research in 40 eligible host locations across the Indo-Pacific region.

The program aims at strengthening ties with countries in the Indo-Pacific region through sharing of knowledge and representing the cultural diversity of Australia.

Every year, eligible UOW students benefit by gaining global exposure, building professional knowledge and developing skills in their chosen fields.

UOW Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Strategy), Professor Alex Frino said the funding will support students’ professional development and give them opportunities to develop the global perspective that is needed in leaders of tomorrow.

“The global experience our students gain through the New Colombo Plan Mobility Program is extraordinary and this year the University has received twice the funding compared to last year to support more students,” Professor Frino said.

“I thank all faculties involved in the application process for their concerted effort in securing this funding and supporting students on their education journey.

“To overcome our biggest global challenges, tomorrow’s leaders will need a deep understanding of different cultures and perspectives. Whether it be on projects such as fostering innovation and social responsibility in India, developing global leadership skills in Singapore, studying the medical application of particle accelerators in Japan or uncovering diversity in Podcasting in Fiji, UOW students will get a tailored experience that will elevate their future careers.

“Our students are the leaders of tomorrow and it is important they get the right training, build their skills and understand the unique features of the Indo-Pacific region - this program offers that, all whilst students complete their degrees.”

Due to the challenges of international travel arising from COVID-19, the New Colombo Plan will deliver global learning programs virtually until travel to host countries is deemed safe.

Students who have previously received a grant will also be able to participate in global learning online programs offered under the NCP.  Information regarding NCP funding and applications for global learning online programs can be found on the Office of Global Student Mobility website or by contacting student-mobility@uow.edu.au.
