Welcome to 51²è¹Ý celebrates students’ contribution to creating a vibrant city

The 51²è¹Ý (UOW), 51²è¹Ý City Council and community partners will welcome international students at a ‘Welcome to 51²è¹Ý’ event on Wednesday 27 March at 51²è¹Ý Town Hall.

The event provides a great opportunity for international students to explore various support services offered by UOW and local community partners.

This year, Autumn Duong from Vietnam, who is studying a Master of Business Analytics, and Nathanael Leong from Singapore, who is studying a Master of Supply Chain Management, will be the Masters of Ceremonies and hosts of the event.

51²è¹Ý City Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery AM will greet the students on behalf of the City of 51²è¹Ý, showcasing the vibrant, multicultural offerings of the city. UOW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Patricia M. Davidson and Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic and Student Life) Senior Professor Eileen McLaughlin, will welcome students on behalf of the University.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome our newest international students to our vibrant campuses and diverse communities and promise to make them feel at home here in 51²è¹Ý,” Professor Davidson said.

“We pride ourselves on diversity and our multicultural mix here in 51²è¹Ý and this warm welcome is a great example of that.

“International students hold a special place in our hearts – they enrich the fabric of Australian society and make our campuses more vibrant, inclusive and connected.”

In the University’s almost 50-year history, we have seen over 185,000 graduates from close to 200 countries go out into the world and make their mark.

“The Welcome to 51²è¹Ý event provides students with a platform to share and celebrate their diverse cultures, fostering a sense of inclusivity and celebration,” Senior Professor McLaughlin said.

“It is also a great networking opportunity for students to interact with peers, UOW staff, and community members.”

Students will experience an interactive cultural dance performance by Indigenous community members, celebrating the rich heritage and diversity of the Illawarra region.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to try their hands on culinary delights, experience a classic Australian BBQ as well as enjoy traditional treats like vegemite sandwiches and fairy bread.

Community partners including Destination 51²è¹Ý, Study NSW, Illawarra Multicultural Services, Service NSW will offer valuable information and local resources to support students.

There will also be stalls run by UOW groups representing various support services, sporting and social services, cultural clubs, societies, and community organisations.
