Physics at UOW is on top of the world
Physics at the 51˛čąÝ has been rated as “well above world standard” in the Excellence is Research for Australia results released recently. As well as scoring the highest possible rating of 5 for the entire Field of Research (FOR) “02 – Physical Sciences”, the maximum score of 5 was also attained in the sub-fields of “0204 – Condensed Matter Physics” and in “0299 – Other Physical Sciences”, which embraces “029903 – Medical Physics”. These results are a testimony to the research powerhouses of the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (0204) and the Centre for Medical and Radiation Physics (0299).
Mathematics has also been recognised with the maximum ratings in two areas. The Institute for Mathematics and its Applications can take pride in a rating of 5 in “0102 – Applied Mathematics” and the National Institute for Applied Statistics Research Australia celebrates a rating of 5 in “0104 – Statistics”.
Other top ratings of “well above world standard” are spread across the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences. These include “0804 – Data Format”; “0907 – Environmental Engineering”; and “0912 – Materials Engineering”; to the credit of the Schools of Computer and Information Technology; Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering; and Mechanical, Materials, Mechatronic and Biomedical Engineering, respectively.
Since the last ERA survey in 2015, the breadth of research quality in the Faculty has increased substantially. Whereas in 2015 there were 13 ratings “above world standard” or “well above world standard”, the Faculty now boasts 19 such ratings.
