The future of work and how the Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts is preparing international students for it.

Preparing for the workforce is the primary objective of obtaining a university degree. But in a rapidly changing world, what does the future of work look like, and what skills are essential to arts and humanities students?

On the 29th July 2019, new and continuing international students attended a ‘Career Readiness’ workshop, hosted by the Faculty’s international team. This event was hosted to facilitate more opportunities for the Faculty’s international students to meet their peers, familiarise themselves with professional and academic Faculty staff, and reflect on their individual career paths.

Students from Norway, Hong Kong (SAR) China, India and Vietnam attended the event, each sharing their work history and their future career aspirations. Faculty based careers consultant, Michele Kenworthy, presented on ways in which students can access support from UOW’s robust careers service, particularly touching on the skills necessary for the future world of work. Associate Dean, International Dr Kate Bowles shared her experiences of a recent trip to Fiji and our global responsibility to come together as global citizens to solve some of the world’s most pressing issues.

The event concluded with a ‘tell us where you’re from, and where you want to be’ event. Students pinned their home country on a map, and then with a piece of string, tied it to UOW. The next part proved tricky to student when asked ‘where do you want to go?’ With some students seeing their post-study life back in their home country, others remaining in Australia, and others wanting to pursue beauty and fashion editing in New York City, or wildlife photography in Madagascar.

The international team can be contacted at lha-international@uow.edu.au if you would like further information on the support they provide to international students studying at UOW.
