Group of Seniors

Helping seniors living connected

Activity overview

How is this program run?

This program is running both online and face-to-face.

What will I do?

Living Connected is a non-profit, social enterprise based at iAccelerate on the Innovation Campus. We support seniors with problems associated with using digital devices. We focus on what our clients want to do not on the technology. Our team provide such support on an individualised basis at at our Drop-in Centres around 51²è¹Ý. Volunteers work with experienced team members at these weekly group sessions scheduled at local aged-care and community centres. Transport from our iAccelerate base is provided when needed.

Living Connected volunteer tutors focus on the wellbeing of older people who can, with their help, remain independent and engaged in society through their use of digital technology. Our student volunteers then develop the ability to pass their knowledge of digital devices onto seniors via experiential learning, working with our experienced team members. Through the process of patiently helping older people to become digitally included volunteers learn not to focus just on technological skills but on improving the learner’s social and economic wellbeing through digital capability.

How will I benefit?

Working with an older person who has little digital skills is very engaging and rewarding. Students take the use of digital devices for granted. Meeting older people who have never used a computer, tablet or mobile phone and explaining how it can be used gives volunteers a new cross-generational experience. They quickly learn that even learning to use how to use a simple app can open up a whole new world to older people.
